What is Acadia? What is the meaning?
The name Acadia honors Founder and Owner Elizabeth’s French Acadian/Cajun heritage and symbolizes the resilience of the Acadian people. Her ancestor, Michel Boudrot (Boudreau) born in the early 1600’s, originated from the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes, near La Rochelle, France. He migrated to Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1639 where he became a prominent and influential figure in the community until the Great Expulsion of 1755. During this forced exile, 14,000 Acadians were displaced, their villages burned, and families torn apart. Many endured horrific conditions aboard overcrowded ships, where some sank, caught fire, or ran out of provisions, leading to hundreds of deaths from drowning, starvation, and exposure. Deported to American colonies, England, France, and the Caribbean, they faced hostility, indentured servitude, and hardship. Some families like the Boudrot’s includeing the (Aucoin, LeBlanc, Broussard, Landry, Richard, Guidry, Breaux, & Thibodeaux families) are examples of Acadian families who survived eventually found refuge in Acadiana, Louisiana, where they rebuilt their lives and communities in places like Breaux Bridge, Washington, Lafayette, St. Martinville. Their contributions as doctors, political leaders, fishermen, crawfish farmers, and business owners played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s prosperity. Today, their enduring legacy lives on in the music, cuisine, and culture that define Louisiana’s rich French Cajun heritage.

“Trauma is not just a story about the past, it is the imprint of that pain on our minds and bodies. The process of healing begins when we can safely tell our story.” -Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score)
